2016 International Literacy Awareness Celebration and Awards Ceremony
Please be advised that our event date is now Thursday, April 6, 2017
On behalf of the National Council of Women of the United States you are cordially invited to submit your book for award consideration in our 2016 International Literacy Awareness Celebration and Awards Ceremony taking place at 6pm on September 8, 2016 at 777 United Nations Plaza, New York, New York 10017.
In 1965, the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared September 8th to be International Literacy Day. Since this proclamation, schools, communities and organizations across America and around the world have used this day to raise awareness about this important human right.
We have a history of literacy awareness from our Books to Malawi project where, with our corporate partner UPS, delivered over 40,000 books to Malawi to our domestic literacy programs to rural schools in need of educational assistance. Almost 775 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 60.7 million children attend school irregularly or drop out. This special event is an example of our effort to decrease those alarming rates. Click to watch the video >>
