ABOUT US
The National Council of Women of the United States, Inc. is a diverse coalition of individual members and women’s organizations who work collectively to address the concerns of women in pursuit of social, economic and political equality.
Founded on March 31, 1888 during a conference in Washington, DC by Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, May Wright Sewall, Julia Ward Howe and Elizabeth Cady Staton, these women of vision and strong humanitarian conviction used their collective strength to start a sisterhood of women regardless of race, creed or religion. Since its founding, NCW/US has played a pivotal role in serving as a clearinghouse of information between its members and public policy.
In addition to its domestic programming, NCW/US is a founding member of the International Council of Women and this affiliation connects National Councils of Women across the globe. This assembly is strengthened when matters of concern to women crosses international borders.
The Council annually serves as host to hundreds of women from all over the world, introducing them to the United Nations as an organized body of 193 member states with many Commissions, Conventions, and Treaties that impact the lives of women and children everywhere. The Council’s work with the United Nations, specifically, addresses the issues affecting gender equality and the empowerment of women. Today, The National Council of Women of the United States is the oldest non-sectarian organization of women in America and continues the work of the original founders to realize the full participation by women in every aspect of society.
NCW/US is an accredited non-governmental organization with the United Nations' Department of Public Information and has enjoyed Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations since 1999. Mrs. Saideh A. Browne is currently serving as the organization’s 40th elected President.
President's Message

A special 2017 greeting to our members, United Nations partners, supporters and friends ~
As we usher in the new year and a new administration in Washington, DC I have reaffirmed my commitment to all women across America and around the world: matters of concern to women is my daily priority.
2017 is going to be our best year ever! We will continue to fight for gender equality and the empowerment and education of women and girls.
Utilizing the framework of the United Nations' seventeen sustainable development goals we will keep working and raising our collective voices on behalf of the next generation of women and girls.
I'm looking forward to what we can accomplish together.
Sincerely,
Saideh Browne
President

OUR KEY Program

CLEAN WATER FOR FLINT
Experts on extreme poverty, housing, and water and sanitation with the United Nations have called for immediate action for what they have deemed human rights concerns over the Flint water crisis.
We believe this is of concern to not just women, but the families in Flint, Michigan and the community at large. Our organization is working with grassroots organizations to deliver water, supplies and aid to the families in need.
Please make a donation to support our work on behalf of the families in Flint, Michigan.

2017 International Literacy Awareness Celebration and Awards Ceremony
will take place in New York City on
Thursday, April 6, 2017
On behalf of the National Council of Women of the United States you are cordially invited to submit your book for award consideration in our 2016 International Literacy Awareness Celebration and Awards Ceremony taking place at 6pm on September 8, 2016 at 777 United Nations Plaza, New York, New York 10017.
In 1965, the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared September 8th to be International Literacy Day. Since this proclamation, schools, communities and organizations across America and around the world have used this day to raise awareness about this important human right.
We have a history of literacy awareness from our Books to Malawi project where, with our corporate partner UPS, delivered over 40,000 books to Malawi to our domestic literacy programs to rural schools in need of educational assistance. Almost 775 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 60.7 million children attend school irregularly or drop out. This special event is an example of our effort to decrease those alarming rates. Click to watch the video >>
